Based on best practice evidence and research, More Europe is a cultural civic initiative to highlight and reinforce the role of culture in the EU’s external relations.
More Europe is a civil initiative of leading European culture foundations like the European Cultural Foundation (ECF), the Fritt Ord Foundation and the Goethe Institute, the British Council, the Institut français, the Danish Cultural Institute, the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (IFA), and -as key liaison partner- the European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) with many EUNIC in Brussels members involved in the development of the project. The initiative was launched at BoZAR, the Centre of Fine Arts in Brussels, on 8 December 2011.
Based on best practice evidence and research, More Europe calls on Member States, civil society and EU institutions to work together in order to join up their vision, pool resources, and coordinate their activities. More Europe aims to shape external cultural relations and is based on a bottom-up approach. It was launched at a high level event, in Brussels, on 8th December 2011 and will continue with a series of public debates and media partnerships across Europe throughout 2012.
EUNIC in Brussels members were proactively involved in the launch of the initiative, which gathered high-level personalities, decision-makers and experts, such as Pierre Vimont (Executive Secretary General, European External Action Service), Leila Shahid (General Delegate of Palestine to the EU, Belgium and Luxembourg) or Frédéric Martel (journalist, writer and author of Mainstream, On the Global Culture War). All participants took part in a lively, open and stimulating discussion in front of 180 decision-makers from the EU institutions, civil society foundations and key personalities.
In 2012, More Europe debates will travel in various EU capitals, meet artists and policy-makers at the highest level, deepen and develop its research component. The first event will take place in Berlin in May. Paris, Copenhagen, Lisbon, Amsterdam, Prague and Warsaw, will follow.
