Starting on the very day the Berlin Wall came down 20 years ago, FOCUS’89 Festival is a week-long tribute to the making of a new Europe. Through a selection of films and accompanying debates carried out by leading personalities, the Festival will explore the build-up to 1989 and its far-reaching consequences on contemporary European culture and society. The film programme is curated by renowned critic Louis Danvers in consultation with Cinematek. Each film will be introduced by its director or scriptwriter or main actor. The Festival is co-produced by FLAGEY and EUNIC Brussels with the kind support of the Swedish Presidency of the European Union, the European Economic and Social Committee and the European Commission. Freedom is a central value for our culture. Democracy, human rights and good governance rest on it. The extremes of fascism and communism of the 20th century proved how fragile, but also how precious this central value is. 1989 remains a milestone of dramatic change – the year when the lives of millions of people in Europe changed and freedom was given the chance to flourish. But this change is not irreversible. We can never take freedom for granted. Already our collective European experience in the 21st century is tainted by oppression and lack of freedom. We cannot yet say that we live in a Europe “whole and free”. EUNIC Brussels and FLAGEY are proposing a set of events that through conferences, films and debates would mediate for the Brussels public the access to a reflection on the relevance of freedom.
