From 21st September to 1st October, the Estonian Cultural Days will take place in Antwerp, the current European Capital of Youth. “BEstonia” will be combining film, music, theatre and folk culture.
This series of events will not only mark the 15th anniversary of concluding the first cooperation agreement between the Estonian Government and the Government of Flanders but also Estonia’s 20th anniversary of regaining its independence. With Tallinn bearing the title of the European Capital of Culture this year, a number of events will focus on children and a young audience.
The Estonian Cultural Days will be opened on the 21st September by the author’s night featuring the Estonian cartoonist and animation film director Priit Pärn and his animated films. The winner of the grand prix at the Brussels animation film festival in 2010 will be interviewed by the famous Flemish curator and film festival programmer Edwin Carels and will introduce you to the extraordinary world of Estonian animation. Throughout the following days, “BEstonia” will continue with a wide range of films and concerts featuring well known artists such as the Jazz musicians Raivo Tafenau or Jaak Sooäär. For those who want to learn more about the economies and business opportunities in the Baltic countries, there will be the possibility to participate in an Estonian-Latvian-Lithuanian business seminar at the Antwerp World Trade Centre.
One of the highlights of the Estonian Cultural Days will be its closing ceremony on the 1st October. Children and adults are warmly welcome to enjoy a whole day full of culture and to participate in workshops around a Viking ship built according to old traditions and model. You will also get the opportunity to make your own animation movie in a Cinema Bus workshop with the guidance of friendly and professional film makers. All films made during the day will be shown on the boat sail in the evening. “BEstonia” will culminate with the play “Fly, bird” by the Sail Shadow Theatre.
